First things first

What is Bala Vihar

Bala Vihar is a weekly gathering of children, from kindergarten through 12th grade, at Hindu Samaj Temple, under the supervision of trained teachers from Chinmaya Mission. Bala Vihar follows a graded series of structured curriculum based on Hindu scriptures. The aim of Bala Vihar is to help children bloom, grow, and inculcate values through fun-filled activities.

Bala Vihar enhances the overall development of a child at all levels — physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual. Chinmaya Mission centers worldwide have become models for teaching India’s rich spiritual heritage and fundamentals of Vedanta to the next generation.

Operating under the guidance of Chinmaya mission centers, Hindu Samaj Bala Vihar classes are organized into different grade levels from Kindergarten to Grade 12 to match the child’s learning ability. In promoting and teaching the universal philosophy of Oneness (Advaita Vedanta), children are made to understand that although Hinduism may appear to have many Gods, the Truth (God) is the one ultimate Reality, and thus it is one God appearing as many forms.

Trained teachers from Chinmaya Mission lead every grade level.

Every class ends with a song.

Purpose of Bala Vihar

Reverence, understood — not recited.

Bala Vihar offers a cultural and spiritual orientation to the children of the modern age. The purpose of Bala Vihar is to inculcate in our children and youth a reverence for our ancient culture and inspire them to live up to the values with correct understanding.

The curriculum and activities in each grade level are designed to develop a deeper and more complete understanding of our values, traditions, customs, and culture.

Bala Vihar parent classes

Parent classes run parallel to the children’s spiritual classes, supporting parents in their own personal and caregiving journeys. The whole family learns in the same hour, in neighbouring rooms.

While the children learn moral values, parents study Vedantic philosophy — bridging the gap between the lessons taught in class and the life the family lives at home.

Questions parents ask

Still wondering about something? Write to us — a real person answers.

  • Who can join Bala Vihar?

Children from kindergarten through 12th grade are welcome. Every child is placed in the grade level that matches their learning ability.

  • Who teaches the classes?

Trained teachers from Chinmaya Mission lead every grade level, following the graded curriculum that Chinmaya Mission centers use worldwide.

  • Does my child need to know anything beforehand?

No preparation is needed. The curriculum starts from the beginning at each grade level, and the youngest classes are built almost entirely around stories, songs, and activities.

  • What will my child actually learn?

A graded series of lessons based on Hindu scriptures, taught through fun-filled activities. Alongside the stories and chanting, children learn the universal philosophy of Oneness — that although Hinduism may appear to have many Gods, the Truth is one ultimate Reality appearing as many forms.

  • Is there anything for parents?

Yes. Bala Vihar parent classes run parallel to the children's classes, so families learn at the same hour. While the children study moral values, parents study Vedantic philosophy — which bridges the gap between what is taught in class and how the family lives at home.

  • How do we register?
